Living in the Amen

What are the last four words that end almost every prayer? “In Jesus Name, Amen” are words that are no stranger to people who have ever heard a prayer. However, let us not get so accustomed to saying these words that they have no true substance in our hearts. Let’s take a moment and show it the reverence it deserves. 

“In Jesus Name”

The concept of a name isn’t as appreciated in today’s culture as it was back in biblical times. Giving someone a name meant you were giving them an indicator of their character or self. That is why there are multiple instances where there are name-changes in the Bible. For example, in Genesis, a man named Jacob got his name because when he came out of the womb, he was grasping his twin brother’s heel. The name Jacob literally means “seizing by the heel.” Now back to Jesus- sealing a prayer with Jesus’ name means that you are reiterating the character of the One you are saved by and praying to. The scriptures tell us what effects go along with the Name of Jesus:

Philippians 2:10-11

Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Think about something in your life that is not in harmony with the things God has intended to give us. Jesus’ Name is greater than its name. Jesus’ character is greater than its character. 

How many times have you prayed a prayer and then worried about if God is great enough to do what you’re asking? Ending a prayer “In Jesus’ Name” is literally sealing your petition with the unmatchable, unthreatened power of who Jesus is. Now, ask yourself if your heart is contradicting the power of the Name that you are saying. When you end your prayer “In Jesus Name” you are enlisting His character over all the words that came before it.

“Amen”

Amen is a word of affirmation and agreement. It is a seal of finality to your prayer that puts it into the hands of God. If you are anything like me, sometimes I pray but worry in such a way that is contradictory to the One whose Hands I gave my prayer to. Amen is symbolic of your heart agreeing with heaven that God’s Will will be done.   

Let’s not allow these three words to become lackadaisical when they actually overflow with power. They should not only conclude our prayers, but they should also change our lives. Live in the Name of Jesus. Allow His character to saturate every crevice of your life. After that, have peace in the Amen. Have confidence knowing that if you are walking with Jesus, you are in agreement with Almighty God.
